NERVE CONDUCTION
STUDY
ELECTROMYOGRAPHY

Nerve conduction studies are specialised diagnostic tests used to assess the function of peripheral nerves and help identify conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, nerve injuries, and other neuromuscular disorders.
During your appointment, small electrodes are placed on the skin and gentle electrical impulses are used to measure how effectively signals travel through your nerves. Some patients may need to also have an electromyography (EMG) test at the same time. During this, the activity of muscles in measured by inserting a fine needle into the muscle. Needle
insertion may cause temporary discomfort, and occasionally a bruise.
The tests are performed by an experienced neurophysiologist and are generally well tolerated. Testing takes between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on how many nerves are tested.
Following the assessment, the neurophysiologist who conducts the test will deliver a report to your referring doctor who will then discuss the results with you.
